Shawn M. Degener is an associate in The Cook Group's Buffalo office, where his practice focuses on intellectual property matters and the defense of toxic tort and product liability. He has experience handling federal court matters involving patent and trademark infringement, as well as preparing domestic and international patent applications for filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Shawn’s background includes drafting and reviewing a range of intellectual property agreements, including licensing, assignment, and confidentiality agreements. His practice also encompasses earlier litigation experience with civil matters such as wage disputes, landlord-tenant issues, and collections, and he has worked closely with supervising attorneys and clients to develop effective legal strategies across various forums.
Shawn earned his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he served as President of the Intellectual Property Society and was recognized on the Dean’s List. He also received CALI Awards for top performance in both Introduction to Legal Research and International Trade Law. Shawn holds a B.S. in Biology from Rochester Institute of Technology with a concentration in communications.
He is admitted to practice in New York and New Mexico.
